Title:  The Dancing Valkyrie
Author: Peter Klein
Blood and sex. Of course love, but not the way humans think about it.

This is the recurring theme throughout The Dancing Valkyrie, a story about Mary Hoffman, librarian by day and exotic dancer by night. Mary, needing some time alone takes a hike along a secluded upstate New York trail. She is saved from two predatory young men by Beth, a beautiful woman slightly older than Mary. The two join together for the rest of the trail, becoming romantically involved along the way. Beth, it turns out is a vampire, and quickly introduces Mary to the mystical world she lives in. After inviting Mary back to her castle, built by her brother, Joseph, in a remote area, Mary is seduced into becoming a vampire as well. Joseph and Beth are hundreds of years old, and pose as brother and sister, but are husband and wife, or, in vampire terms, father and daughter. Thus begins the fascinating story of Mary’s transition from human woman to vampire.

This book is full of rich and incredibly descriptive prose that makes you feel you are in every scene. The dialog is both thought provoking and believable (of course we are talking about vampires), with an excellent mix of philosophical, religious and historical references mixed within the real time story. The plot is not complex, as the story is more of a journey than a twisty-turny, keep you in the dark project. It is more than adequate, however, as you quickly become submersed in the protagonist’s discovery process. Klein presents vampires in a light never seen before, and frankly one of the most inventive and most original depictions I’ve ever read.

This is an absolute must read if you are a vampire fan. It should be tempered with the fact that it is an erotic novel. However, the sex is an integral part of the novel’s framework and not only necessary, but adds to the overall richness of the work. A pleasant surprise on the last page was: “TO BE CONTINUED.”
Highly recommended.

Controlling guns without controlling guns

Here are a couple of simple solution to the gun control problem without actually banning guns.
Do require a background check for the purchase of every single gun purchase and add a requirement that the person pass a mental exam prior to the purchase.
Before purchasing a gun, the purchaser must purchase liability insurance for each gun purchased. This requirement would clear a lot of guns off the street and in the woods because law enforcement would be required to ask for proof of insurance when stopping someone who has a gun.
Insurance companies would love this.
Lastly and this doesn't effect gun ownership in the least, ban the sale and possession of body armor to civilians.

Fighting nature is a losing game

Genre: Action - Adventure
Title: Cataclysm '79: The day the river stopped
Author: Robert Egby

While this is a work of fiction, set in British Columbia's spectacular Fraser Canyon, it might not be as far fetched as some might think because as recently as June of 2012, people were evacuated from the flood plain of the Fraser River.
This is a big book (464 pages) with a large cast of characters whose fates collide when a large portion of a mountain along the river breaks off and dams the river, setting the stage for a natural disaster of epic proportions. Hundreds of thousands could die if the rising waters behind the rock slide dam break free to rush downstream to Vancouver.
Events begin to unfold on Canada Day weekend, July 1, 1979, when a large section of Vicar’s Peak crashes and blocks the Fraser River.
Main character, Paul Rowan, who was an international news correspondent but is in the valley at the Wagonmaser Resort to write a travel story, soon finds himself caught covering a story filled with stupidity, bigotry and greed run amok.
The story is topical and timely in the sense of human unwillingness to take into consideration the natural environment and the forces of nature in their pursuit of money. I couldn’t help but think of Hurricane Sandy and the need to plan for disasters.
This is also a love story rekindled when Rowan meets his long lost love, Natalie D'Andrea, who secretly aborted his child while he was away covering war stories.
Much in the way of background is given to the many characters, some of whom you will love and some of whom you will hate. This slows down the action some but not by much and you might find yourself thinking as I did that this would make a great disaster movie.
Who will live and who will die when the dam breaks is what will propel you to read to the surprising and in some ways magical end.

Next Secretary of State

Everyone is thinking John Kerry will be the next Secretary of State.
This is what the Republicans want. But if Obama does what they want, he is a fool and a coward.
Since the Republicans don't want Susan Rice and do want Kerry so that they have a chance of slipping in a Republican in the Senate to replace Kerry, Obama should nominate none other than John McCain.
It would be so funny to watch McCain and other Republicans squirm.

Gun control

A few simple suggestions.
1 – don't vote for anyone who has a high rating from the NRA because it shows they are political cowards.
2 – Anyone guilty of domestic violence should have all of their guns taken away and destroyed.
3 – That popular TV program that I like to watch, Criminal Minds," should have its name changed to "Insane Minds."
4 – When you know someone who needs some mental help, make certain they get the help they need.
5 – Ban all automatics and semi-automatics. If you are a hunter and you can't hit your target with one bullet, you need to stop hunting or learn how to shoot straight.
6 – All gun sales should require a background check and all first time owners of guns should be required to take a gun safety course. We do it for hunters and drivers.
Yes, I own a rifle. Yes I like violent TV programs and movies. In fact, going to see Sky Fall tonight. But remember, just as guns don't kill people, it's people who kill people. Same is true for movies and video games. They don't kill people. People kill people.
